Arthur Leslie Lydiard was born in Auckland, New Zealand. A marathon runner, he later achieved fame as a coach of middle-distance runners, two of whom, Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, won Olympic golds on the same afternoon in 1960. From 1960 he popularized the habit of jogging as a means of avoiding cardiac problems. Among his books are Run to the Top and Running the Lydiard Way.
