Born on July 8, 1851, in Nash Mills, England, Arthur Evans worked as a curator and archaeology professor before leading excavation at a site on the island of Crete. His digging led to the discovery of an ancient civilization he dubbed Minoan after King Minos, and he made further discoveries that helped form a picture of the ancient Mediterranean world. Knighted in 1911, Evans died on July 11, 1941.
