Art Blakey was a jazz drummer and one of the inventors of the modern bebop style of drumming. He started off playing in nightclubs, working in the steel mills during the day. By 1939, he was performing with Billy Eckstine. He later traveled to Africa and converted to Islam. After returning, he founded the Jazz Messengers and toured Europe. As a bandleader, he helped develop many young musicians.
