Anne of Cleves, a German noblewoman, was the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England. The marriage was arranged to create an alliance with Anne's brother William. At the time, it appeared that the two major Roman Catholic powers, France and the Holy Roman Empire, planned to attack Protestant England. Their marriage was annulled after the politics dissipated.
