Anna Magnani was an Italian actress, best known for winning an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a Sicilian widow in The Rose Tattoo in 1955.

Born in Rome in 1908, and shortly deserted by both her parents, Anna Magnani became an actress. Raised by her grandparents in a slum, she later became known for her volcanic and fiery presence. Her first international attention came from a role in Rossellini's film Open City. Tennessee Williams specifically wrote The Rose Tattoo for her to star in, for which she won an Academy Award for in 1955.
