Synopsis
Profile
Actor. Born in Queens, New York. Enamored of the theater from a young age, Amy Ryan attended Manhattan's High School of Performing Arts and Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center before taking her first professional acting gig as Daisy in Biloxi Blues. She debuted on Broadway in 1993's The Sisters Rosensweig followed by a revival of Uncle Vanya, for which she earned her first Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was nominated again for A Streetcar Named Desire, and then made the decision to leave Broadway shortly after to pursue a film career.
Ryan appeared on film in several supporting roles in the 1990s, as well as in numerous guest appearances on primetime television, most notably A&E's crime drama 100 Centre Street. Her first truly notable part, however, did not come until 2005's Capote starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Her agility with dramatic scenes landed her the good cop role of Officer Russell in the hit HBO series The Wire, making her a household name among cable-viewing American audiences.
In 2007, Ryan was cast as Helene McCready in Ben Affleck's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone. Her performance as the negligent, defiant, unsympathetic South Boston mother of a missing 4-year-old girl earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Upcoming projects include the crime thriller Before the Devil Knows You're Dead with Ethan Hawke.
