Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926, in Newark, NJ. He attended Columbia University and became friends with Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. "Howl," Ginsberg's first published book, was a long poem that dwelt on homosexuality, drugs, Buddhism, and post-World War II America, themes that stayed with him his entire career. Ginsberg was a longtime countercultural icon. He died in 1997.
