Alexander Gardner was born on October. 17, 1821 in Scotland. He was hired by Mathew Brady as a portrait photographer and moved to the US. When the Civil War erupted, Gardner assisted Brady in recording the conflict but then struck out on his own in 1963. Gardner's war photography, including his portrait of Abraham Lincoln, are among the best-known images of the war. Gardner died in 1882.
