American political activist Abbie Hoffman was born Nov. 30, 1936, in Worcester, Mass. He was active in the American civil rights movement before turning to protests of the Vietnam War and the American economic and political system. Hoffman's ethic was codified with the formal organization of the Yippies in January 1968. After he was arrested in 1973 on cocaine charges, Hoffman went underground.© 2013 A+E Networks.
