From “May the force be with you” to “I am your father,” the Star Wars franchise has been a rich source for classic movie lines, and today is a day to celebrate them like an Ewok. We sidled up to the bar at Mos Eisley Cantina in honor of Star Wars Day, and came up with a list of memorable lines from a galaxy far, far away.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master.”
When Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) starts trash talking to Obi Wan (Alec Guinness), the Jedi master was armed with a snappy comeback: “Only a master of evil, Darth.” It wasn’t the first time Darth Vader got burned by old Ben.
"Why you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder!"
Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) may have had feelings for Han Solo (Harrison Ford), but she certainly wasn’t happy when the space cowboy made a joke out of it. She was so irate, she compared Han to someone who herds space buffalos and then goes on to make out with Luke (Mark Hamill). Her brother.
“I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything’s soft. . .and smooth. . .”
Sometimes movie lines fall down flat and sometimes they fall down and flop around like a Klatooine paddy frog. Although George Lucas was capable of writing some bad lines, this one in particular is a groaner.
"I love you."
At the end of The Empire Strikes Back, fans finally get their Ross and Rachel moment, when Leia professes her love for Han and he responds with the iconic “I know” line, moments before being lowered into carbonite by a pair of oompa loompas. This classic quote was improvised by Harrison Ford. In fact, the original script had Han saying “I love you, too.”
“You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.”
Science nerds will tell you that when Han boasts about his spaceship to Obi Wan, it makes no sense since a parsec is a unit of distance, not time. Even bigger nerds will argue that it does make sense because the Kessel run, which normally took 18 parsecs, could be flown in 12 parsecs if a pilot flew dangerously close to the nearby black holes. You’re welcome, science.
"I'm rather embarrassed, General Solo, but it appears that you are to be the main course at a banquet in my honor.
With their big eyes and furry faces, Ewoks got a whole lot of cuteness going on. That is, until you realize that at one point they were planning to feast on our heroes.
“These blast points — too accurate for Sand People. Only imperial stormtroopers are so precise.”
Obi Wan Kenobi had a high regard — some would say laughable — for how well stormtroopers could shoot. They almost never hit their target in any of the original trilogy.
“I feel like a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I feel something terrible has happened.”
The destruction of Alderaan seems to give Obi Wan a case of metaphysical heartburn. As a kid, I always thought he said “millions of oysters suddenly cried out in terror.” Looking back, I now realize that didn’t make sense for a whole variety of reasons. But listen for yourself.
“That boy is our last hope.”
“No, there is another.”
You don’t need a high midi-chlorian count to appreciate this exchange between Obi Wan and Yoda. They’re referring to Leia, according to conventional wisdom (and by that I mean people who attend Star Wars conventions.)
And if you’ve seen the second trailer for The Force Awakens, it looks like we’re going to see Leia the Jedi in action.
