The unlikeliest of Hollywood actors is set to make a film about one of the greatest warriors of Jewish history. Oscar winner and notorious loose cannon Mel Gibson is developing a film for Warner Bros. about the life of warrior Judah Maccabee. According to Jewish tradition, Maccabee led the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies— an event that's celebrated on Hanukkah each year. It's a surprising move for Gibson, who's long faced accusations of anti-Semitism. His 2004 film The Passion of the Christ was deemed anti-Semitic by some critics for its unflattering portrayals of Jewish characters. In July 2006, Gibson was arrested in Malibu for drunk driving— an incident that was topped off by a rampage that included anti-Semitic comments, and crude sexist comments directed at a female officer. Gibson apologized for the DUI incident in a written statement, calling it "a moment of insanity." Unfortunately for Gibson, it wasn't the last such moment— he was caught on tape berating his girlfriend last summer. Needless to say, his long run as one of Hollywood's most bankable actors has been on shaky ground of late. We'll see if audiences are receptive to the latest chapter in the epic story of Mel Gibson's career.
