Ingrid Bergman calls to mind a black-and-white screened Hollywood. A Hollywood of class, character, and beauty. Soft images of Bergman's porcelain face allure our eyes. Yet behind the glamor there exists a real person, with real roots in a real world. And as we celebrate her birthday and mourn her loss, both of which occurred on August 29th, we've decided to look back at her earliest years on film.

With her father Justus Bergman at her side, Ingrid Bergman was just five years old in the photo above. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden on August 29th, 1915, and it was at the tender age of three that she lost her mother. But her father embraced his role as a single parent and began to encourage a lot of Ingrid's artistic endeavors. Justus owned a photography shop and was able to capture much of her early life on film. However, the encouragement only lasted until 1929 when Justus passed away. Ingrid was just 14.

Years later director Ingmar Bergman, whom Ingrid is not related to but did work with multiple times, took all of Justus' home footage and edited it together into a short film for her. It would seem that even from a young age Bergman was destined for the silver screen.
