For so many comedy greats, laughter has been the frontman to tears. A lesson legendary silent film star Charlie Chaplin learned as a child growing up poor in London.

Today, on what would have been “The Tramp’s” 125th birthday, we take a film strip look at one of Chaplin's childhood memories and how it helped define the tragicomic vision that would become the heart of his legendary persona.
