Andy Rooney, the journalist who provided the quippy video essays at the end of 60 Minutes for more than 30 years, announced that he is stepping down from his regular slot this Sunday. While he won't be ending his career completely, the 97-year-old Rooney will limit his appearances on the weekly newscast. Rooney has been a fixture on 60 Minutes since its first season in 1978, producing more than 1,000 segments for the television magazine. According to a letter released by CBS, Rooney will make the announcement about his impending retirement on this week's broadcast, followed by a retrospective interview led by 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer.

CBS did not announce whether or not they would replace Rooney. "There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be," said Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman. "He’ll hate hearing this, but he’s an American original...and a great friend."
