Arthur Leggott (Nicholas Amer), retired music teacher and inspiration to all, is battered to death with a torch. No one can understand this seemingly unprovoked attack, until they find a music score belonging to the famous local composer Joan Alder, dead for the past 20 years, in amongst Arthur's effects. Arthur had been Joan's music teacher and had helped her become an accomplished musician. But discovery of the priceless Midsomer Rhapsody manuscript leads to surprising revelations and outlandish claims about Joan's life and death. Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby (John Nettles) and Detective Sergeant Scott (John Hopkins) investigate the web of family feuds and long lost love affairs to discover what is real and what is fake.
