Elvis Presley is one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century and a pioneer of Rock 'n' Roll music. Coming from meager beginnings in the deep south, he rose to the height of stardom in the mid 1950s and early sixties as a successful musician and actor. He produced hundreds hit songs and starred in over thirty films throughout a career spanning two decades.
Highly influenced by African-American musicians of his day, he combined the styles of Rhythm and Blues and Country, set it to up-tempo songs and delivered high energy, crowd pleasing performances. At first criticized by lawmakers and peers for singing and gyrating his hips too suggestively, Elvis would soon become one of the most beloved and imitated artists of all time.
The eccentric style and grandiose concerts that defined the second half of his career: rhinestone jumpsuits, sequined capes, and dramatic performances, became not only his trademark, but also iconic symbols of pop music.
Elvis helped usher in a new sound in music by successfully crossing genres and still remains one of the best-selling artists of all time. He is honored as an icon of popular culture and referred to as the "King of Rock 'n' Roll".
