Anna Nicole Smith Biography

Alt Text Anna Nicole Smith captivated audiences with an over-the-top figure and a larger-than-life personality, and skyrocketed to fame in the early 1990s posing for Playboy and Guess jeans. Hailing from a poor family in Texas, her life read like a rags to riches story filled with Hollywood glamour, yet plagued with scandal and tragedy. She became a tabloid mainstay after she wed an 89 year-old oil billionaire, was often criticized for behavior deemed "trashy", and even tipped the scales at over 200lbs, but Anna always maintained her popularity - ringing in the highest ratings for the debut of a reality show on basic cable with 2002's "The Anna Nicole Show". Often compared to the 1950s sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, her life ended similarly with a prescription drug overdose at the age of 39 in 2007. She died less than a year after losing her 20 year-old son to a drug overdose, amid the controversy of a paternity suit for her newborn daughter and the ongoing court battle for her late husband's estate.   • 1967
      • Anna Nicole Smith is born Vickie Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas on November 28th. Her parents, Donald Hogan and Virgie Mae, divorce two years later. When her mother gets remarried in 1971 to Donald Ray Hart, Vickie changes her name to Nikki Hart.
  • 1980
      • After attending Elementary and middle school in Houston, Texas, Anna moves to Mexia Texas to live with her Aunt Kay Beall and attends the Mexia High School. She drops out of high school during her sophomore year.
  • 1985
      • At 17 years old she weds 16 year-old Billy Wayne Smith on April 4th. He is a fry cook at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken where Anna works as a waitress.
  • 1986
      • Gives birth to son Daniel Wayne Smith on January 22nd.
  • 1987
      • Separates from her husband Billy and moves to Houston, TX with her son Daniel. She finds employment at Wal-Mart, then Red Lobster, then as an exotic dancer.
  • 1989
      • Arrested for DWI in Houston.
  • 1991
      • Meets 86 year old oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall while performing at a strip club in Houston.

      • J. Howard Marshall dies on August 4th and Anna immediately contests his six wills and seven trusts which left her disenfranchised from his wealth. She battles J. Howard's son E. Pierce Marshall in court for over a decade for a piece of the billion-dollar estate.
      Checks into the Betty Ford Clinic for alcohol and prescription drug abuse.

      • Appears on the cover of the February issue of Playboy magazine as the "$450,000,000 Playmate".
  • 2002
      • Stars in her own reality show "The Anna Nicole Show", on the E! Network. It is the network's highest rated show and Anna is at her highest weight of over 200lbs.
      A federal judge reduces the almost $450 million awarded in the 2000 ruling of $88 million.
  • 2004
      • Meets celebrity photographer Larry Birkhead at a Kentucky Derby party in Louisville, KY. The pair date for 2 years.

      A three-judge panel reverses the 2002 ruling, stating that Anna is not an heir to the Marshall fortune, but ruling that the federal court could not overrule the state ruling of 2000.

      After a battle between her mother Virgie Arthur and Howard K. Stern over Anna's body and burial, she is ultimately laid to rest in the Bahamas
      Larry Birkhead is named as the father of Anna's daughter, after a court orders DNA testing in April
      Playboy magazine honors Anna with a Special Tribute issue in May chronicling her Playboy years.
