Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, worked as an attorney before turning to politics. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, becoming the fifth youngest senator in history. In 2008, he resigned from the Senate shortly before taking the oath of office as vice president on January 20, 2009.
