Happy Hanukkah! As we embark on the first days of the Jewish holiday, take a look back at the famed Emanu-El synagogue in Manhattan in 2006. Here Mayor Michael Bloomberg
and former Governor Eliot Spitzer
take part in lighting a menorah on the first night of Hanukkah. The synagogue was the regular place of worship for both men who also celebrated the rededication, as well as a $25 million dollar restoration of the building that year.
Emanu-El’s history dates back to 1845, when the first Rabbi, Dr. Leo Merzbacher, lead a congregation of just 33 people.
