October 9th holds a special place in the hearts of the Lennon family. Both John Lennon and his son Sean Lennon share birthdays on this day. Sean, who was just five years old when his father was killed, turns 38 today (John would have been 73.) And despite only having had John as a father for five years, Sean Lennon considers himself lucky. “Five years is a short time,” he said in an interview with The Telegraph. “I wish I had had maybe 10. But I am lucky. I’m lucky to have had a father who paid attention. I think it helped me psychologically. It’s given me a level of confidence.”
It was also on this day that Yoko Ono made a $1 million donation to Central Park to open Strawberry Fields on October 9th, 1985. The site broke ground on March 21st, 1984, when Sean Lennon was just nine years old. His father had been gunned down just a block away outside of the Dakota building just four years prior.
During the ceremony, in which several hundred people had gathered, Yoko Ono said to the gathered crowd “This is John’s memorial and you made it happen.”
