Four hundred and fifty four years ago, Queen Elizabeth I
was crowned Queen of England at Westminster Abbey on January 15th, 1559. Here we see the Queen with her orb and scepter and a cloth of gold which was previously worn by Mary I. This particular portrait is just one of about 1,300 images of Queen Elizabeth I in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The gallery recently received its very first portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton
, which has been met with some varying opinions. But if she’s anything like Elizabeth I
, the Duchess will have many more opportunities to find that perfect portrait.
