Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball and began his professional career by being named Rookie of the Year in 1947. Derek Luke had only two acting credits to his name when he was cast for his big Hollywood screen debut. Both made successful careers out of their talents. In 1942, Jackie Robinson was drafted and assigned to a segregated army cavalry unit in Fort Riley, Kansas. Derek Luke played the role of Aubrey Stamps in Spike Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna (2008). Aubrey Stamps was a solider of the 92nd Infantry Division, a unit comprised of African American soldiers from all states.
