Yahoo's Marissa Mayer No Telecommuting Policy: Good or Bad Idea?
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is in a bit of hot water for her recent company memo which informs all of her employees that their pajama partying days of telecommuting are over and that they'll be reporting into the office from here on out. Needless to say, Yahooligans—from working moms to techies—are flipping out over the new policy, which will go into effect June 1st.
“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side," Mayer's memo stated. "That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home.”
Some are calling Mayer's new edict an "anti-family policy," while others are tossing out statistics that people who telecommute are more efficient and more likely to work longer hours than if they were pining away in their cubicles.
Still, some journalists and bloggers are trying to give Mayer the benefit of the doubt on why she made the decision, surmising that she may be trying to drive away the slackers and testing her employees' committment.
Despite the backlash of Mayer's announcement, Uberflip CEO Yoav Schwartz is someone who supports her decision. “It’s about being part of an ecosystem, Schwartz told Wired. "I think that’s what Mayer was trying to convey. If you’re building a culture, a huge part of that culture is being present within it.”
