Fashion Week may be wrapping up, but that doesn't stop blogger and fashion expert John Jannuzzi from thinking up more great contemporary fashions for our favorite historical figures. Since we just finished celebrating Lincoln's birthday (Whew! What a party that was) and we're about to partake in more festivities with President's Day, we decided to ask John what he thought Lincoln would wear on these auspicious occasions. Here's what John had to say:
"Everybody in the country knows who Abraham Lincoln was. But in case you're reading this from a foriegn place, or need an elementary school history lesson, allow me to review: Mr. Lincoln was the 16th president of these United States and took office as the country was in turmoil. Upon his election, Southern slave-owning states made it clear that they were to secede under his term. Slowly but surely, the country broke up and the Confederacy was founded.
The secession, along with several other events, led to the American Civil War, creating one of the darkest periods of American history. For his part, Lincoln lead the country through the war, eventually restoring the Union and abolishing slavery. With the country in a state of disarray, he and his cabinet set about putting things right during The Reconstruction, and continued to battle for civil rights. Lincoln's policies earned him heavy criticism, and his enemies eventually caught up with him. He was assassinated while at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C.
Historians generally rank Lincoln as one of the most influential (read: best) presidents of all time, often placing him above all the others. And it's no wonder why, since, you know, he's part of the reason we have a sort of free country." - John Jannuzzi
