Muammar al-Qaddafi is Dead, Say Libyan Officials
Muammar al-Qaddafi is dead, according to the head of the Libyan military council. The former Libyan leader was killed on Thursday, as fighters took hold of his hometown of Surt. Libyans poured into the streets as news of Gaddafi's death spread.
Colonel Qaddafi fled the capital, Tripoli, in August, when the city fell to rebel forces. Demonstrations against Qaddafi and the ruling family broke out in February, on the heels of the neighboring revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt. In March, NATO came to the aid of Libyan rebels with aerial campaigns, and early reports say Gaddafi's convoy was the target of a NATO bombing on the outskirts of Surt.
The eccentric ruler lead Libya for more than 40 years, taking power in a 1969 coup. He and his family pocketed billions from Libya's oil revenues, and ruled the country with a brutal authoritarian style. Qaddafi remained at large for months, as small pockets of loyalists were believed to be potecting him in the western part of the country.
