One man is famous for breaking a long-standing race barrier by hiring Jackie Robinson, the other is best known for his role as husband and father on the TV sitcom Roseanne. Both men excelled in their respective fields, but did they share any common ground before their successes?

 

 

College Athletes
Branch Rickey began playing professional baseball while he was a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. He went on to devise the farm system of training baseball players.

In 1970, John Goodman received a football scholarship to Southwest Missouri State University. During his first year he spent a lot of his time playing football, but an injury squashed his dreams of a professional sports career.
