A family spokesperson confirmed that former college football coach Joe Paterno passed away this morning, only two months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled," his family said in a statement. "He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been."
Paterno served as the head coach for Penn State's Nittany Lions for 46 years, leading the team to 37 bowl games and 24 wins. In October 2011, he set a personal record with 409 career wins, making him the leader in career wins for Division I coaches.
Paterno, who retired in November, is survived by his his wife, five children, and 17 grandchildren.
