Dominique Strauss-Kahn will soon bid adieu to New York City. The rape case against the 62-year-old French diplomat has been formally dismissed by the Manhattan district attorney.
The charges were brought by Nafissatou Diallo, a chambermaid who accused Strauss-Kahn of attacking her in his hotel room on May 14. Evidence showed that there was a sexual encounter between the two—but after it became known that Diallo had told lies including an earlier false rape claim, her account of the encounter came into question.
Whether Strauss-Kahn can salvage his political career remains to be seen. He resigned as head of the International Monetary Fund after the scandal broke, and his once-bright prospects for the French presidency seem to have dimmed. One thing's for sure, though; Strauss-Kahn won't miss the New York City tabloids that branded him "Le Perv" and plastered "Le Perp Walk" on covers.
