Film actress, born Shirley Schrift in St Louis, Missouri, USA on August 18, 1920. Shelley Winters trained as a stage actress in New York City before her film debut in What A Woman (1943), and appeared in many films before her first major role in A Double Life (1947).
She won Supporting Actress Oscars for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and A Patch of Blue (1965). She donated her Oscar for her role in The Diary of Anne Frank to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.Later notable films include Lolita (1962), Alfie (1966), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), S.O.B. (1981), Stepping Out (1991), and Heavy (1995).Notable stage performances include Night of the Iguana and A Hatful of Rain.Winters also had a memorable role from 1991-6 on the popular sitcom Roseanne, playing Nana Mary, the title character's grandmother.
